dyi car seat for yorkies
#1

I am planning a long car trip and want to make Bud and Maggie safe and comfortable. I'm pretty handy and was wondering if anyone had any good ideas about building a safe care seat for the "Bits".

If you have room for them, an appropriate sized crate for each of them would work. Just secure the crates. Another car seat method that I use for my MinPin is a hardness with a short leash. I bucklet the short leash in the center of the car so if we were in an accident he won't 'fly' through the windshield, side glass or hit the doors or back of the seats.
This also gives him freedom to move around somewhat in the car, and also to lay down comfortably.

Car harnesses vary in quality. If you choose to go that route, make sure that the attachment that couples the harness to the car seat belt is made out of strong metal, not plastic. The corresponding part on the dog's harness that would take the strain in a crash, where the leash attaches, should also be of metal, not one of those plastic squeeze buckles. In the event of a crash, those plastic buckles will fail. I use a mountaineering-grade carabiner to attach my dog's car harness to the car's seatbelt.
