Can cat food make a puppy itch?
#1

We have a puppy visiting us for a short while. The last few days she has been itching incessantly and I discovered that she has been eating our cat food (which is for urinary tract health). Could the cat food be causing the itching? We just bathed her and I don't see anything wrong with her skin. Thanks for any advice!

There could be something in the cat food that is causing that reaction. It may also be an allergen in your house, since the puppy is visiting. Bathing may help ease her discomfort for the time being.
I would also keep her out of the cat food just to be safe.

cat food, dog itch
Some things to try:
-while the pup is there, add a bit of cod liver oil to the diet. Just a tsp.
-keep out of cat food and litter
-bathe once a week with a oatmeal shampoo
-brush daily (or more if possible)
-keep the dog from chewing itself whenever possible
-if a rash or hot spots develop, seek veterinary attention, or repost

Sudden changes in diet can trigger allergic reactions, whether you are switching brands, or giving the dog something it doesn't normally eat.
Absolutely, eating the cat food could be the source of the problem, but so could a number of other things in your home that aren't present in it's usual enviroment.
When the cat is done eating, put it's dish away so the dog (and the cat) can't get to it.
