Food aggression towards other dog

We have had a new puppy for 2 weeks and we have a 10 yr old dog. Just in the last couple of days, if the older dog is near the puppy when we are getting the food out or beginning to feed her, the puppy goes after the bigger dog. Any suggestions?

It is up to you to train the pup and to teach acceptable behaviors. In a loud voice tell the puppy, "NO!" Then, command, "Sit." Then give positive reinforcement, "Good Dog!" He will soon learn. Teaching the dog to sit is part of the training. Sit, Stay, Down, and Come are the most important commands. Dogs must be taught that to get food they must follow your command. The same goes for getting attention, toys, going outdoors, etc.

You really need to feed the dogs in their own space, as they shouldn't be eating the same food anyway.

http://www.bichon.org/ has some excellent write ups on training a new puppy.
