ear troubles
I have a blood hound/ lab cross who suffers from ear mites/allergies.
The dark red brown goey cheesy smelling stuff that is a constant in her life no matter what diet we give her.
question is I've seen the vet give her the ear flush few times before and feel i can do this at home. I just want to make sure I'm doing it right.
anyone know how this is done properly?
Thanks very much.

As a retired vet tech, I suggest you take her in to your vet, and explain that you want to learn to be able to do the washes at home. If your vet is any good, s/he will show you how to properly do them, and also suggest a schedule on how often to do them as well.
Also, one thing I recommend is using Revolution, which is a once a month flea treatment, that also kills ear mites and some types of worms. The allergies may be an issue, but ask your vet about this product. Then follow their recommendations.
Hope this helps.

It is very important to regularly clean the ears to prevent serious infections from happening. One of my Golden's has one ear that is prone to creating "junk". My vet provided me with an iodine based cleaner that does the trick. As long as I clean it at least weekly it won't develop into a serious infection needing medication such as Otomax (I'd recommend that stuff if an infection does occur).
