Hi: I live in Hawaii and imported a three year old male Maltese who is an Australian champion. He originally was sent from Europe, at seven months old, to Australia. I had previously purchased and imported a ***** from the same breeder. This pup came to me at 7 months and is an angel!! I have owned, raised, and shown dogs for many, many years. However, I have always had the pups from 8 weeks old. These two are the exception as I can not buy dogs from the US mainland without them going through quarantine.
To make a long story short, he is a fear biter. I can't trust him around anyone except family. First time in an American show ring and he was excused from the ring because of "aggressive behavior." Not once, but twice on successive days!
Of course I contacted the breeder. She said that he has never exhibited such behavior in the past. Obviously he was okay in the ring in Australia, because he won his championship. I have had him for a little over a year now. He is sweet with our family and our two other Maltese (the previously mentioned ***** and a neutered male). He sired a beautiful litter, but I couldn't let him near the puppies. I was afraid he would hurt them.
We love him like crazy.....BUT.....I can't trust him with anyone else except family. Therefore, I can't board him anywhere....He has to be muzzled at the Vet (which adds to his anxiety)....I have to crate him when we have guests...He hates most women and somewhat tolerates men...Forget children! He is a disaster waiting to explode. I've worked with two trainers on a limited basis to no success.
My question is this: Have any of you had a dog transported for a long distance and encountered this type of behavior? I feel so badly for him. I look into his eyes and I know he wants to be friendly, but he is terrified. He breaks my heart. I think he must have been mistreated in transit. I'm at my wits end to help him. Any suggestions? Any similiar experiences? Thank you for your time, K.

I would suggest finding a good trainer who specializes in aggressive behaviour correction.
I have not had the transport issues, but I think you hit the nail on the head with your guess, if the breeder is being truthful. (which there is no reason, to believe they are not telling the truth) I would also guess that he was abused probably by a woman in transit or possibly in quarantine.
Please do keep us posted as to how things work out, as I for one would like to hear if you solve this problem.
Sorry I could not be of more help with this situation.
