My cat has a cold

Hello!! My cat has a cold right now. Since my roommate and I cannot currently afford a vet visit, is there anything we can do for him at home? This cat loves Chef Boyardee sauce with hot sauce mixed into it. Could this help clear him up? I would very much appreciate some input on this. Thank you all in advance for any advice in this matter.

Doubtful that anything short of anti-biotics can cure the cold. Might make him/her feel better but thats about it. Can you tell us what the cat is doing that makes you think it is a cold? Good luck.

He breathing sounds louder than normal like congestion and sounds congested when he purrs. He is also sneezing a lot more and his eyes are leaking a little bit like he is crying soundlessly. Thank you much for the luck since we will need it. I hate to ask my boss for a loan since he is presently helping me with a payment arrangement to the IRS ( He sends the payments in and I give him a portion of my paycheck back).

It sounds like your cat has an upper respiratory infection and honestly you need to take him to the vet asap. It could be something simple that anti-biotics can cure, however, it may be something more serious as well.

Best bet if money is an issue is to check with your local Humane Society chapter or ASPCA and see if they have organizations that can assist with your vet costs for this. Also, many vets will work with you, if you have a good relationship with a vat already, it cannot hurt to ask them if they can split up the costs.

I don't want to worry you, as it may be simply a case of Rhino virus, which is easily cured, but it can also be symptoms of other not so easily dealt with diseases.

Please keep us posted.

Cats are afflicted with a number of viruses that produce symptoms like a human cold. Your cat expresses all the symptoms mentioned in "The Cat Owners Home Veterinary Handbook" by Dr.D.G. Carlson D.V.M. and J.M. Giffin M.D.. It only states that a visit to the Vet is highly suggested. Sorry, I know this is not what you wanted to hear.

Suprised no one mentioned it, but it wouldn't hurt to stop feeding the cat Chef Boyardee sauce (or any table food). That stuff is loaded with salt, sugar and fats in proportions that are certainly not good for it's long term health, it's not even good for humans

But no, hot sauce won't cure anything.

Every time I use the can opener at home, the cats come running to the kitchen based on the assumption that it is a tuna can I am opening. When I cut up an onion, they come running even though I have offered them slices before which they will not touch. BTW, it has been a long time since I gave them Chef Boyardee since I have gotten sick of it. The cats actually belong to a friend of mine that I live with and giving them the plates and such has started before I moved in.
