Selecting a Dog
Labs, collies, beagles, and more. You need to order "Right Dog For You" (Paperback)
by Daniel F. Tortora. This book discusses breed, behavior, and temperament. Describes sporting dogs, working dogs, hounds, terriers, toy dogs, and nonsporting dogs. There is a chapter on selecting a dog. Summary on physical and behaviorial characteristics of all purebred dogs according to the six breed types.

I agree your best bet is to research. I favor herding breeds--had Shelties and have upsized to Collies. You might also want to visit a dog show-- this is peak season. You can see many types of purebred dogs and get really valuable information (with a smile) from breeders and exhibitors about their favorites.
The American Kennel Club website can give you lots of information about dogs, being a responsible owner and about shows in your area.
Even if you choose a mixed breed from an adoption at the shelter, you may be better prepared for him or her if you understand the basic characteristics of the breeds that the pup came from.

If you want a dog who will be with you all the time, such as laying on your lap all day--then the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is the dog for you. They do not like to be left alone though. We always have someone home. We cannot be home though she does fine in her kennel
Good dog hunting.
