ATTENTION: Pet Food Recall Please Read

I just finished reading several articles about a pet food recall for mainly canned pet foods (Wet foods). There have been several pet deaths due to kidney failure, that has triggered the recall. Here is The press release from the company:

http://www.menufoods.com/recall/Press_Recall_03162007.pdf

Here is a link to the page with a list of the products affected:

Please take a moment to check your pet's wet foods to be certain you do not have any of the affected products. Many of the products are national *house brands* although some are also well known name brand products.

The results of the tests just came in and they found rat poison in the food!
How awful is that? It's heartbreaking Hopefully this will lead the way to some big changes in the pet food industry.

You know what's scary? We had left over Nurto canned food in the pantry from December 2005 when my little Killer was being a stubborn old Cairn and wouldn't eat. We were trying all sorts of flavors (don't remember which) but still had a can that wasn't on the recall. BUT the expiration date on the can was very close to some of the recalled Nutro flavors that were recalled. In my mind, I am wondering how long this poisioning problem has been going on, since I bought this food in 2005....

My thoughts on your concerns are this...

The company reacted very quickly and responsibly once the connection to the food was made. I think that it was more than likely a one time occurrence. I personally feel they did the right thing, and in a very timely manner once the issue was discovered.

One thing to note is that if the vets are doing a good job, they will discover by good detective work, issues like this quickly, which I feel was done in this case.

It is heartbreaking to be sure, for people to have lost the pets that died, however, I think that since the vets did their jobs, and did them well, so many more pets were saved from a similar fate.

What I found interesting (not being a pet owner) was that this same companys plant makes some 40 makes of dog and cat food, from the high dollar iams and eaukanuba (sp) to the cheap house brands.

Sure makes you wonder, doesn't it...
