Dog swimming

I have a 1 tr old poodle mix. I'm taking him to a dog park that has a pond. He has never swam. I doubt the pond is clean enough for me to get in. All dogs & geese. I'm thinking I can let him go in with a rope tied to his collar so I can pull him back if he has any problems.
Any sugestions?

I'd use a harness instead of a collar - I'm not fond of pulling a dog by the neck.

You don't mention how big the pup is, but I have to agree, using a harness is much safer and more humane if you have to pull him out. I will say, most dogs do just fine in the water unless they have extremely heavy (when wet) coats.

Hope he enjoys his first real swim...oh, and hopefully the geese are nice ones! ;-)

My dogs were a bit chicken of the water at first. If you find yours is try to find another dog who is swimming. Mine couldn't resist going in the water if their "playmates" were doing it! Good luck.
