my cat killed bird worried about west nile
#1

My cat killed a sparrow and when i got her to drop it it was just moving its legs. I didn't see where she killed it but it must have been in the bushes. My cat as had all her shots so if the bird had west niles what would happen. I think the shots are supposed to stop my cat from getting it.This is the first time she's killed a bird. This was a wild bird.

Actually birds can and do carry the West Nile Virus quite often, however a cat or dog becoming infected from eating a dead bird is unlikely. For more information on the Vertebrate Ecology of West Nile, see this CDC Link:

I would be very careful to keep mosquitos from biting you, and your pets and also with any dead birds found, regardless of how they died.
Hope this helps.
