Question Can U change a 13 yr old dog's cat issue?

We have two 3 year old cats and a 7 year old Spitz/Lab mix. My daughter volunteers at an animal shelter. They have a 13 yr old Corgi/Spitz mix that has asthma, arthritis, aged hearing lose and cateracts{SP}. He is a lovable dog and our daughter wants us to foster him because the damp cold kennel is not doing him any good. The problem is...He hates cats!!! He chases and bites at them and in doing so triggers his asthma. We would love to care for him because he is an affectionate animal and craves interaction attention. Can you change the behaviour of a dog this old? And if so, how? Our current animals come first but our hearts are breaking for this guy that everyone overlooks because of his age.

Thanks,

Doug

At this age, I doubt you could change his behavior before the end of his life.

You might be better off in finding some place without cats. Behavior is difficult to change in a dog as old as that one.

Thanks Chris and Mitch. You both confirmed what we already knew. At 13 though no one is looking at him and Homer really wants to love and be loved. We just wish he wasn't so sturborn about cats

We are helping the shelter with a campaign to get him fostered someplace.

I don't think you could change that behavior, even if he was younger, because it's his nature. Some dogs can get along with cats, others cannot, because it is in their nature to go after them.

My dog could not get along with cats when it was only 12 weeks old - she literally kept trying to fight cats twice her size. She attacked the one kitten she was around, so we kept them away from her.
