Question Is my goldfish going to explode?

I have some 30 pond fish all in good health with one exception. 'Lazarus' suddenly became very swollen 18 months ago but appeared otherwise well. I suspect he is 6 or 7 years old. This is the 2nd winter that he has survived but he is now so swollen that he is floating upside down most of the time. When I go to net him and remove he turns tail and [slowly] swims away. I can't face ending his existence but I fear he may be in pain. Is it a tumour perhaps and should I put him out of his misery?

Jack,

There are actually several diseases that could be the cause of Lazarus' problem. Have you done any research on Pondfish diseases like Dropsey and such?

I am sadly out of the loop these days with aquatic illnesses and parasites, but I will take a look and see what I can come up with.

Can you give more information on what climate you live in? How big/deep is your pond, how do you feed, what do you feed etc. The more info I have the easier it "might" make figuring it out. Either way I will do my best, but it may take a bit of time.

IF you could isolate him in a tank, you may also have a better look at hime, and perhaps see a possible injury etc...

Jack,

I did a bit of searching around and found this article:

Glimmering Goldfish Facts on Health Issues (dropsy, ick, fungus, parasites, swimbladder, and more)

It sounds correct for what your fish appears to be doing. I would suggest a bit more research since you have the fish where you can actually see what it is doing.

That site is specific to goldfish and their issues. I hope this helps.
