Insulin syringes

Hello, Does anybody know if you can use human syringes for a cat with diabetes? They seem to be about half the price of the ones the vet sells. The ones I am using now are U-40 1/2cc 29G x 1/2".
Thanks

I don't see why you couldn't use them. Try asking a pharmacist if they have any justification for not using them.

Curious: How often does the cat have to shoot up?

The needle size is about the only determinant. Small gauge needles are supposed to be less painful.

I used the human syringes when I had a cat with diabetes. Worked just fine, they were very small needles. I think they were called something like microfine?? My father-in-law, who had diabetes, helped me get what I needed. And yes, the ones from the pharmacy are a LOT cheaper. I gave 1 shaot per day, in the morning as my cat was eating; the cat didn't even flinch.

Another option would be to check with some of the online veterinary suppliers. They often sell syringes in bulk, cutting the cost by a lot.

my syringes are 29 gauge 5/8" (so you would just not stick them in as far) and 1 cc (so you would just draw in what you need.)

now, my syringes cost something like 30 cents a piece. Are you folks talking a lot more for these things or what? If you are paying twice what I pay, that would be a savings of $9 a month.

Thanks for the replies. After doing some research online I found out that most human syringes are for U100 type insulin and not the U40. The U40 is a weaker version insulin and the U40 syringes make it eaiser to measure the small amount you need to give animals. I found them online at Amazon for about $17 for 100 compared to $33 for 50 at the vet. Nap-twice a day.
Thanks
Steve
