how to break up a cat fight

whats the best way to break up a fight between 2 house cats and mean a all out fight? 2 of my cats got into it big time and would not stop for nothing not even being sprayed by a spray bottle. I was not home at the time so my dad had to grab the cat that was causing it to get the fight to stop and in the process got his hands torn apart(so he says but the rag didn't have that much blood on it all it looked like was someone cut themselves shaving). so if a spray bottle doesn't work what another way to stop a fight.

Growing up we had cats and cats and more cats. Fortunately most of the fights were with strangers and all we would hear was the screeching and If you have ever heard a real cat fight you know it is a hair raiser. We did have a few between just our own cats and as you said, "what works?", I don't know. I was young and indestructible back then and simply grabbed one cat in each hand, but suffered the same wounds your dad experienced. Water never fazed them, but wonder how they would react to silly string or an air horn. Hitting them with pepper spray would make a mess, but a loud sound or covering them with that party string might be worth a try. To me, it would be better than sticking my hands in a meat grinder. Let us know if anything helps.

Flirty, I have often used a heavy blanket/towel to cover them both, and then separate through the covering to spare my hands. Nowadays our cats when they do scrap, stop with a shout and the spray from our spray bottle (ours is a commercial grade with a strong stream, not cheap but well worth it). Perhaps whacking them (not too hard mind you) with a bed pillow? I think that would startle them enough to stop, so you could safely grab one of them and put them in separate rooms.

Maybe others have some ideas, but please don't do the Silly String stuff, it can be toxic to cats and dogs.

I guess I'm a victom of not reading up on an old party toy. Just did some reading and agree the silly string should be off the option list.

Thanks for the correction RhainyC,
Bud

Any loud noise usually works for us.

Bud,

No worries, I have sadly had the experience with dogs having eaten the stuff and getting violently ill. It would seem a safe enough thing, but sometimes even innocent things can cause problems.

We only have one cat, but my wife and daughter get into it really good sometimes. Usually I throw a blanket over them and it stops right away? Hope that helps! Beer 4U2

The title of the post piqued my interest, but quickly doused it when I saw it was really for "cats". In my younger days we frequented country dance halls. Boy, the cat fights that broke out makes wrestling really look fake. We just backed off. Sooner or later the dust would settle. But I'm off topic. Sorry.
