Preventing Ticks on Cat

Our cat spends her days outside and nights sleeping in the garage. We treat her monthly with Vectra but we still find about three attached ticks a week. Anyone have a recommendation how to better prevent her from getting ticks? We live in the country surrounded by fields and forest so avoiding tick areas and treating the yard are not options. Looking at the Vectra package and website they do not claim that it controls ticks, so what would be a good treatment to try.

Pilot Dane,
I just read about Vectra and it specifically states NOT to use on cats. Did your vet say it was ok to use it on your cat? I have used Advantage, not Advantix (which cannot be used on cats) for many years, but it is not a tick killer, so I can't recommend that for ticks, but it can be used on cats.

Here is a link to products that kill fleas and ticks. Do be careful and check that the product is safe to use on cats...it looks like Revolution might be a good choice from the list. It also kills some worms, and ear mites.

We are using the Vectra for cats Summit VetPharm and Animal Health Care Company but it does nothing for ticks.

Thanks for link. I'm looking into Revolution now.

Pilot Dane,

Ok I wasn't sure which Vectra you were using, so had to ask!

Do keep us posted on what you choose, and let us know how it works for you.

Reading the Revolution website it prevents ticks in dogs but there is no mention of it preventing ticks on cats. Right now the number one pick is looking like Frontline Plus Green. I had high hopes for Revolution so we would not have to hold her down twice a week for ear mite drops. I'm glad we don't have kids. One cat is a lot. I can imagine all the medicines, drops & pills a child needs.

Frontline works great on my cats. cheapest source for it is the online book seller named after a river in Brazil. I almost never see ticks on them. They are indoor/outdoor cats.

Thanks for the tip. Funny you should mention it. A box from the largest river in the world arrived yesterday with Frontline.

Got a catalog for professional pet groomers (not sure how I got on that list). Their wholesale prices were higher than the site I mentioned.

Frontline gets my vote as well. Bio-spot seams to work pretty good but leaves a larger and longer lasting oil spot.
