Ocd

I have a cat, I have had for 3 years. This may sound strange, but my question is can cats have OCD. My cat won't walk more then 5 steps or so without stopping to clean its self, unless it is running to the window, to check on a noise it heard. And if you pet the cat, or pick it up, it has to clean its self. And as for going out doors, no way. You can take the cat out, but there is no way you can put her down, she will tear you up. She will set on the open porch for hour or steps for hours, but grass or dirt is no way.

Edward,

Cats have many issues, but I have never heard of one having OCD. I will look into it more this evening when I return from work.

You don't mention if your cat is spayed. Also, what sort of treatment are you using for Fleas? These things can affect how cats act and respond to certain things. Some cats simply are too afraid due to things that happened to them early in life and do not adapt well to things.

Edward,

Since I hadn't heard back yet about whether your cat was spayed, and what sort of flea treatment you are using, I did some research without addressing those possible reasons for the grooming and such.

After doing a little bit of searching, you may be on to something, sort of. According to the Merck Vet Manual, cats can have OCD.

Here is the link to the Merck Vet Manual page that tells about it:

Merck Veterinary Manual

I would definitely talk to your vet about it.

Do keep us posted with your kitty, and let us know what your vet has to say.

No she isn't spayed, and since she will not even go any farther then the porch, we use front line on her about every 45 days in the summer. We have had her 3 years, and my sister inlaw had her flea dipped before she gave her to us, and I haven't seen one flea.
We use to have 2 cats, but the other one was just much. Always starting fights, won't use the litter box. And could shred paper better and faster then a paper shredder. More then once my daughter has lost her homework due to the cat. I bet that was a new one for the teacher, my cat ate my homework.

We have a cat (last one left out of three, unfortunately) who never used to want to step off the porch in VA. Grass...uh uh...snow...forget it...dirt...are you kidding me?! After we moved here and started letting his step-brother (I know...I'm such a cat person!) out in the yard, the younger one started venturing out. After a few times....he was running all the way around the house, rolling in the sand, and trying to stalk birds. And he didn't start this till he was 13 y/o.

Moral is...cats can be wierd...lol.

I don't know about weird, but some times I wonder if she is all there. It was starting to get cold, with winter coming, so it was time to close the windows. The kitchen window, she would set in for hours if she wasn't on the porch, has no sill. The window needs to be open to set there. I don't know how many times I have seen her jump into the window, before she started reaching up there first to see if it open. Or upstairs playing with something, and come tumbling down with. And then give you a dirty look, like it was your fault. I still laugh about her trying to sleep setting up, and falling over. That time she hissed at me, she was so mad, and all I did was laugh. I knew something was going to happen, she started swaying side to side, then over she went.

Off topic, slightly, but Vic started it. We've got two mousers and one sissy cat. Mousers use the dog door in the basement....sissy you have to let on the front porch....one door only! So I get the great idea to build a cat tree, being a naildriver, and all. Build this magnificent multi tiered offset cat tree, so they would all have a place to perch waiting on someone to go past. Carpeted it with coordinating carpet so it would not clash with the LR furniture. Well, it's at the Animal Shelter, now. I donated it. My cats just looked at it. I would put them up on it. They would jump down.
Vic is right, Edward, cats are weird.

And mine has multiple personality disorder. Three distinct personalities that rotate about every two months. An inside cat that never goes out and uses the liter box, an inside cat that never uses a litter box but goes out to do her business then comes right back in, an outside cat that only comes in for food.

You should see the nice perch I built for her that she never uses. Actually used a 6" tree trunk, bark on with a padded round platform at the top. She acts like it doesn't exist.

P.S. She isn't my cat. I am her human. The first time she broke in to the house while I was at work I threw her out. The second time she broke in I said to heck with it, went and bought a bag of food and renamed the opening she found the cat door.

Comedian Sean Morey does a great "cat" song. Here it's used for background on a youtube video:

YouTube - LOL Funny Cats Song

P.S. He also does a "dog" song for the dog lovers.
