dog eye is swollen

i have a chihuahua and his eye has been swollen for about 2 days now i dont have the money to take him to the vet last time it was like this i accidentally gave him a black eye while we were sleeping but i checked his eye this time and its not black but it is really red around it i was wondering if it would be ok to give him human eye drops to help the redness?

Welcome to our forums!

You can't know if it would help the redness if you do not know what is wrong.
Maybe you can find a vet who would look at your dog and give you time to pay.

I would think something like Visine would be fine for your dog. We have a cat that get one eye kind of winkie. it normally goes away after a few days.

Ambers,
What you can do is use Murine Tears. You don't want to use any eye drops with anything other than a saline solution, without talking to your vet. You can also use cold compresses if it is also swollen, if he'll sit still long enough.

I also second the suggestion of checking with your vet to see if they'll make arrangements with you. Another thing you may try is to see if there is a Animal Rescue group in your area, that has help for folks with little money and a pet in need. I know that in our county we have several who will help with, or sometimes completely cover the vet bills for people in extenuating circumstances.

Hi Ambers,

Your dog's eye really needs to be seen by a Vet to find out if it is infected or injured or both. Allergies are a possibility but typically that affects both eyes.

A swollen eye is typically treted with eyedrops that are a combination of antibiotic and a steroid. However, if the cornea is scratched the steroid is harmful. A vet needs to examine the eye with dye to know for sure.

As others have posted, until you can afford care or make arrangements for it, preservative-free saline (the kind sold in single-use vials) can be used.

I'm sorry about your situation, I've been there. If you make as many calls as you have to, I'm hopeful you will run into a Vet who can work out a payment schedule with you.

You can also try CareCredit, it is accepted by most animal hospitals.

Hope your pup is better, keep us posted.

I think giving him a small amount of eye drops would be fine. Maybe buy a cheaper brand that is more water based, just to be safe. Hope he feels better!

mikej40,

We try to offer accurate and safe advice here so would you be so kind as to tell us on what you base "I think giving him a small amount of eye drops would be fine." and why "a more water base product" would be better?
