Wheelers,

Please do NOT change him from puppy food. GSD's and ALL Large/Giant breed dogs should be on Large Breed Puppy until at least One Year Old.

What was your pup's breeder feeding? Are you still feeding the same? Why are you wanting to switch to an adult food?

Let me know these answers and I may be able to give you more insight.

Dog food

Some one told me if i switched that the adult food would be better on his bone development but i will do what you said & stay with the puppy food. Thanks for your advice.

Wheelers,

If you want to be sure his bone developement is good, be sure you're feeding a high quality (not grocery store brand) Puppy food designed for Large or Giant breed dogs. These kinds of foods will have more nutrition for bone growth and such, that is needed for large breed dogs.

Glad to help~

Hi RhainyC.
There is actually some evidence that switching large breed puppies to adult food early on is better than keeping them on puppy food. The large breed puppy foods tend to be very similar to adult foods.

Similar but not the same - large breed puppy food is meant for large breed puppies while adult dog food is meant for dogs who are no longer growing.

HD_Sheena,

All the recent nutritional findings I have read and spoken to breeders and vets about have been on keeping puppies on puppy foods until fully adult size and age is the same that I was taught years ago. I haven't seen any findings for the switching of puppies (especially large and giant breeds) to adult foods earlier than adulthood.

I would love to see the research that shows it is ok to do so. Presently I am researching Giant Breeds due to the coming necessity of a mobility dog. I am looking at Mastiffs, Pyrenees and Newfoundlands for this purpose to assist me, since I am not a small person.

I still stand by using appropriate puppy foods for puppies, through adulthood.
