I just had a deer walk through my yard at noon. He seemed to be in no hurry and looked a bit thin. Is that an indication that it is sick? Later I saw it lying in the grass on its stomach.

A couple days ago I had three taking a break in my yard so I'd say "no" that's not too unusual. They tend to move more at dawn and dusk or during the night but they also move during the day. Depending on your yard and the available cover it can be usual to see them in the open, but it depends. Deer use their ears as much as their eyes. I've noticed when it's raining or when there is a lot of background noise like logging in nearby areas deer will rest more in the open where they can see predators approach. When it quiet and the deer can rely more on their ears they'll rest in more dense cover. I also see them more in the open this time of year... before hunting season. After hunting season opens their movement pattern can change dramatically depending on the pressure they are under.

Could be a first year deer, they are still on the small side. In some areas they are quite used to people; they live quite well with us as we like to make gardens and fields and such. Or it could have been struck by a car and not feeling very well. Many possibilities. I have pics of deer on my trail cam that look horrible with warts covering them. The fact is, they are only skin deep and don't hurt the animal at all. The deer were otherwise healthy looking adults, running with the herd.

Thanks for the replies. Perhaps my wife and I are getting too nervous about it being so close during the day. We know there are a bunch of them who cut through our yard to get to a cornfield but it's almost always at night. I'll have to keep my eyes open for that one.
