Rebel XT~Is the 17-85 IS USM Lens That Much Better?
I have the newer Canon XT with the standard zoom lens.
Can offers a 17-85MM IS USM lens. Other than the image stabilization and a better overall zoom range is the lens really worth the price (currently still over $400) for the better made (or so I have been told) lens.
Can anyone direct me to a website comparing the two lenses?

Skip the 17-85mm. Of the new ef-s lenses, this one scores the lowest out of the bunch. I've used this lens with the XT. I did like the IS, but there are better image quality lenses out there. I've read a review that claims the kit lens is better than this lens...I don't know about all that, but since you're asking, I thought I'd post it. There is also a lot of people who like it. For a walk around daily lens, the range is good on a 1.6x body like your XT. For the price of this lens, I'd had hoped for a faster lens. It does focus very fast and pretty silent. If it was me, I'd actually look at the Sigma, Tamron or Tokina lenses. For around the same price, you can get a 24-70'ish f/2.8 throughout the focal range. It doesn't say Canon, but they've received some high praise. I've sent you a PM regarding two different websites for reviews and forums...something I've been a member of for quite some time. All the information you need will be there. Good luck with you purchase and let us know what you decided on.
Oh...if you haven't already, go now and buy the 50mm f/1.8 II. This lens is right around $80 and is very sharp, very light and the absolute best value lens Canon has. It's almost glued on my 20D. Until I can buy an "L" lens
