Question heater coil, 97 ford ranger

I have a 97 ford ranger, ext cab with 4 cyl. The heater coil started leaking this summer, now it's starting to get cold. Can it be replaced without removing the dash? I've been told 2 different ways, the mechanic wanted 200.00 for labor, but the part is only 30.00 at O'Reilly's.

it looks like atleast part of the dash will have to be removed you can look for yourself at this site, but the remove and install procedures are not very complete. just select your vehicle and then go to quick find and heater core.
