Ignition switch (electrical) should be mounted further down on column. There should be a metal link that attaches the key cylinder to the ignition switch. Try gently moving this rod while turning the key. Rod should be able to be removed by taking off ignition switch.
When all else fails, you'll have to go into the column.

To actually remove the key/tumbler assembly, you'll have to remove the steering wheel, horn, and turn signal switch. There's a locking bolt underneath all this that holds the assembly in the steering column.
The turn signal switch doesn't have to be completely removed, feed some slack up the column (the switch's harness) and gently lift the switch over the center shaft, to 1 side.
Ford's and some Dodges' use the simpler "push pin" to remove as mentioned by Fordman30..GM hasn't caught on yet **GRIN!**
