what is an ege sensor and where would it be on a 1986 raanger 2.9 litre fuel injected?

the egr sensor tells the computer the amount of egr flow, ford use a couple of different types one was a sensor that bolts directly on top of the egr valve, the other type wich i think your ranger has is a small square plastic box that has a hose hooked onto it that runs to the egr valve exhaust tube should be located near the throttle cable bracket. if your ranger is backfiring through the intake you may want to check your ignition timing if it is slow it can cause a backfire through the intake and in general be low on power.
