I can't shift when my truck is running

When my 1985 Chevy 1/2 ton 4x4 is off, I can shift into gears. But, when I turn over the motor, it won't go into the gears without alot of grinding. I don't know if I need to replace my whole clutch system or if it's got to do with something else. Can you help me?

go to the site below for more information select 1985 k10 and then select drive train.
http://www.cybrrpartspro.com/Manual%...delLookup.html
first you will need to know if your clutch is hydraulic and actuated by master and a slave cylinder or if its just a mechanical linkage hook up, if hydraulic make sure it is full of fluid first then have someone push in on the clutch to see if the slave cylinder moving the clutch fork if it is you have an internal problem likely clutch or pressure plate any time you have it apart you should change clutch, pressure plate, throwout bearing, and inspect clutch fork for excessive wear, and may want to resurface flywheel.
if it is not hydrualic you basicly check the same thing while someone is pushing in on the clutch make sure the clutch fork is being moved and all linkage is hooked up.
the above site should have adjustment information on it also.
