Ranger Problems
I have a 93 Ford Ranger 2WD, 6 Cyl. with two problems. First problem is hesitation and missing when cold. Starts fine, but misses for about the first 2-3 miles. After warmed up runs fine. Cleaned the throttle body which helped a lot but didn't quite eliminate. Changed Spark plug wires, checked plugs - clean, gapped correctly, not cracked. Do I need to replace the idle air control solenoid? Second problem - the gate for 5th gear and reverse seems to have fallen off the end of the earth. Shifter goes way wide so something is wrong. Even with this, it goes into selected gear. Feels like the gate just lost the pattern for these two gears - like that part of the gate just disappeared. What is the problem? Thanks

suggest you have codes read on the vehicle, might check for a vacum leak around intake using carb cleaner when engine is cold and missing use caution when doing so and it is always a good idea to have a fire extinguisher handy, is this a 3.0 or 4.0 v-6?

Ranger Problems
Bejay, thanks. I had the codes read - there are none. No check engine light. When I bought the truck, I got the paper work with it and one of the comments from a service man was that if the IAC needed to be cleaned again, it should be replaced. So, I cleaned it with the pretty good results mentioned in first comment. But, still the missing when cold niggles at me. How do you do that checking for a vacuum leak with carborator cleaner? Oh, it is a 3.0. Thanks again for comment.

you spray along the intake gasket both lower and upper to see if you hear a change in the engne such as bogging down from the carb cleaner.
an intake leak is relativly common on the 4.0 but not the 3.0 so i doubt that is your problem you may want to leave it with a shop overnight so they can see what the vehicle is doing and diagnose it.
