'92 Ford Ranger - Power Steering Fluid Smells Weird

As long as I'm here, might as well ask another question about the 'ole Ranger.

When I turned a corner a while back, I noticed a little bit of vibration. Later, I unscrewed the fluid check cap from the power steering pump--the dipstick wasn't there! Near as I can figure out, the last time I had the truck in for service, one of the guys must have busted the stick off and didn't say anything to me. Anyway, as I cleaned around the cap, I noted that the fluid had a 'burned rubber' kind of smell to it.

Any ideas what this could mean?

At the very least, time to flush the system... you'll need an assistant and the process can be very messy. If the system is at all noise prone, flush with regular atf until it comes clean and then switch to synthetic.

Kep an eye on things regularly for the first while to see if the concern returns or not..... this is providing that the only concern you currently have is stinky fluid.
