1989 GMC Pickup - Transmission
Hello I have a 1989 GMC 2WD Pickup with a 350 Motor and a 700R transmission (well at least from what I am told). 2 weeks ago I was driving home and my transmission shifted from 1st to second kind of awkwardly hard and then from 2nd to the engine revving really high as if it was in nuetral. I am guessing my trans is shot, or the gears of 3rd and 4th have blown out. The odometer says 215K miles however when I purchased the truck a year a go the owner told me that the drivetrain was replaced at 100K. Any suggestions, is this a tough job to replace a trans? I'm a pretty handy guy when it comes to mechanics, however I have no experience in transmissions.

if you have the tools and jackstands and atleast one floor jack and someone to help you to remove and install a rebuilt tranny then you could probably change it yourself as it shouldnt be that difficult on this model, if you can get a hold of a transmission jack it would make the job alot easier.
if you do decide to install it yourself suggest having the transmission shop that you purchase the transmission from show you how to correctly install the torque convertor and it is usually recomended to flush the transmission cooler and lines to help prevent possible early failure of the rebuilt transmission.

Out of the blue....common?
what is the problem though, why does my truck drive until it reaches 2nd gear and then rev real high after it tries to shift into 3rd? It is a 4 speed and also I seem to be hearing a lot about the torque converter. Is it common for people to install them incorrectly? Also the thing that astonished me is that this completely happened out of the blue, with no symptoms. The truck was driving fine then I parked it ran into a store, came out and the transmission kicked. Never had any problems prior to that. Normal or is there something odd there?

you would have to remove the transmission and disassemble to find out exactly what the problem is a transmission shop could probably narrow it down to a couple of different things based on your description as they will know which parts commonly fail to your model transmission either way you are looking at a rebuild or replacing with another rebuilt unit.
you said you have no experience with transmissions and giving that it is not uncommon for someone not familiar with transmission work to install a transmission and somehow not get the torque convertor all the way engaged and ruin the newly installed transmission within a few miles.
it doesnt really mean anything that the transmission started acting up out of the blue.

tranny
I had a similiar trouble on my truck. I dropped the pan and the connectors to the upshift moduales were loose. Just see if those connectors are loose, if they are just push them on and hope that was the problem. Also changing the fluid is big since dirt can get stuck in one of the oil ports.
