1990 Ford F-150 Tailgate latch removal

I am trying to take the tailgate off of my 1990 Ford F-150 pickup. The handle does not release the tailgate latches. I cannot open my tailgate because the latches will not release. How do I fix this problem so I can remove this broken tailgate?

my tailgate on my 99 F-150 was slightly damaged, and it made it kinda hard to open and close, but I found that if I push in on it at the same time I pull on the latch, it will finally open, and also sometimes it its hard to close, until I get mad and slam it shut. hope this helps. RH

if there is no access cover to get at the linkage it would be on the inside of gate if you have a bed linner remove it off gate and see if you have one if not you will need a long flat blade screw driver get it between the edge of the gate and try and push the latch in and the last way if you are replaceing the gate totaly than get a cut off wheel and cut your own access hole and move the linkage good luck
