1995 Ford Explorer Automatic Transmission Problem

I have 1995 Explorer - 4.0 - Auto Trans. The "OD OFF" dash light started blinking on and off when engine is started and the transmission started to down shift hard when slowing down and coming to a stop. The over-drive is shifting properly. Can anyone tell me what the problem is?

Thanks for the reply! My buddy has a scanner and I'm going to scan tonight. Are all of the solenoids internal? If I get the code can you advise about the repair? Thanks!!

I haven't found codes yet (been very busy), but am I wasting my time and should this be done in a transmission shop? I am an electrcian by trade and have worked on cars all my life, but one area that I have little experience in is the auto transmission. Thanks!

OK - here is where I'm at. Code "647" improper 3rd gear ratio - or something to that effect. One shop said trany is failing, needs complete overhaul. I spoke with another who said , clear the code and wait to see if it comes back. Could have been a mis-shift. The hard gear changes after the "od off" signal on the dash was a result of the trany going into default mode. All pressurres are set to increase and gear changes will be hard until code is cleared. What is your opinion?

yep the best bet is to clear them out and give it a try and see what happens
if it happens again than a rebuild is in the future for sure

In response to the O/D light flashing

I know this post is old but I HIGHLY recommend what your second repair guy said and try disconnecting the battery. I just had a problem where my check engine light came on. Turns out it was the PFE sensor (I have a 95 explorer too). Then the O/D light went on and I had the same issues with the hard shifting when slowing down. I replaced the PFE sensor...check engine light gone. O/D off still flashing. I then disconnected and reconnected the battery...problem solved!!! Chances are this is the problem with your truck and it will NOT need any type of repair. Hope this helps anyone experiencing the same problems.
