'92 S 10 4x4 Takes long time to shift back into 2wD

Truck is a 1992 S 10 4x4 V6 4.3 w/ auto.transmission with 100,000 + miles.

Problem: Last couple of winters, ( the only time I really even use the 4wD ) the
time it takes to shift ( on the fly or parked ) back into 2wD has gotton longer and longer, to the point of not shifting out of 4wD. The last time it did this, I ended up taking the transfer case short shaft out to have 2wD until I figured out the cause.

I have checked all vacum lines and replaced the vacum reserve canister. The diaphram that the 4x4 shift cable goes into up on the right inner fenderwell holds good vacum as far as I can tell. Is it my 4x4 shift cable has stretched or is
otherwise bad? Any ideas and/or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

4x4's often get finicky with age. On fords & jeeps it is often benificial to back up a short distance to help it disengage.
