1987 Ford F150

My son has a 1987 Ford F150, rwd. He wants to put the read end, transfer case and front end from a 1986 Ford F150 4x4 onto his 1987. Is this an easy swap or is there more involved? Thanks for any help you can give us.

never heard of converting a 2wd to 4wd before i think there's too much involved..starting with diff transmission and front axle, also cab modifications to make room for new linkage...to me definetely not a job to even consider doing...if indeed it can be done at reasonable cost.

My wife has a nephew that turned his 2 wheel chevy into a 4x4 utilizing his sons wrecked chevy 4x4. It also was a full size truck. I don't know how much trouble he had but he is very mechanical. I doubt it is an easy job but if he is competent enough to do the swap I wouldn't think he would run into any problems that couldn't be resolved.

Not a small job but it is doable... transmission will also need to be changed. Of course the 4X4 driveshafts will be required... a little added cost if the wheelbases are different, too.

Patience will be a big plus on a job like this.

switch it

I mean, why doesnt he just switch what he likes on the 87 to the 86 that alreay has 4x4. Seems like this would be easier. Body panels and interiors are cake. He probably wants engine from 87 but that would be easier than making it 4x4.

I am o.k. mechanically and have a 98 f250. I called a 4x4 shop and they said they could switch it for me but it is just cheaper/easier to get a different truck. Unless you are just messin around with them for fun.
