1997 f150 ABS and ABS light problem

ABS light comes on and stays on for some time and then goes off and stays off and then back again. the brake pedal chadders when it come on or goes off. What can I check?

well, the first question to ask is;

should the ABS be activating when it is? The brake pedal will shudder (actually pulsates) when the ABS is activated under normal operation.

If I remember correctly the Ford pickups also had a problem with metal accumulating on the toothed wheel in the differential which could cause a ABS light. You did not specify if you had abs on all wheels or not. there was more than one system available at the time.

as well, there seems to be a service bulletin on that model/year for an ABS problem as well

the odd thing though is typically when there is an ABS problem, the ABS system is simply deactivated and the brakes work as a normal system. You seem to be having some other problems.

I would suggest being sure all the rotor wheels are clean. If the control module cannot read each tooth on the wheels, it will see it as a problem and react to it.
