89 Silverado 4x4

Just bought this, very nice shape with 124k miles. The owner said I need rear seals and brake shoes, they're wet. Must be a small leak, he's never had to add fluid to the rear end.

Can I do like I did with my 68 Longhorn, raise one side and pull the axle or does the differential have to be opened?

Also, this has anti-lock brakes I think it's called, is that a problem? I know nothing about that.

Thanks

Open it up

If it does not have the full floater rear end (looks like a coffee can) you pull cover off diff and remove the c clips from axle shaft and slide axle out. You do have to remove the cover.

Thanks but I chickened out...too darn cold up here to be laying on a garage floor so I took it to the local garage.

They figured someone had overfilled it because the shoes and everything else on both sides was saturated with grease. It took them an extra hour (didn't charge me for that) to clean everything up.

Only cost me $220, seems like a good deal all things considered.

Oh, didn't look like a coffee can to me, just a round cover with about 10 bolts holding it on.
