either the shift cable is binding and not allowing the shifter to move to the proper position or possibly the rear trans mount has broken and allowed the trans to shift sideways so it is binding. check for proper alignment of the trans and shifter. most have a hole in the shifter at the trans so that a drift pin can be inserted to hold them in alignment while the cable is adjusted. if the trans is properly lined up and the shifter is properly lined up then disconnect the cable at the trans and see if it still moves stiff at the column. if it is still hard to move then probably your cable will have to be replaced.
