Electroninc 4 wheel drive sticking

I drive a 1999 F250 truck with electronic four wheel drive. I recently used the 4L option for a brief period of time. When trying to shift OUT OF 4X4 to 2H, it was stuck in 4L and would not release. I tried several things (backing up, going forward, switching in/out of 4L/4H/2H) but to no avail. After driving for about two miles, I checked the fuse to see if perhaps it had blown (NOPE, it was fine). I shut off the engine and restarted the truck only to see that the thing had shifted OUT OF 4L, back into 2H. What is up with that?

This is not the first time the 4L has stuck "engaged". I have gotten it to release before by backing up for 40-50 ft. and have it "snap out" of 4x4 (sound like something would break).

Anyway............what might be causing this to happen? Do I need to drive in 4x4 more often? What remedee do you recommend?
