1990 Toyota 4+4 pickup front drive axle removal problems

I need to replace the front drive axles and inner spindle bearings. I have the hubs removed. I removed the 6 nuts from the inner flange. the problem is, the 6 bolts won't back out and there is no way the axleshaft will drop down through the steering knuckle. Anybody know any tricks to removing these axles?

LOOSEN NUTS HOLDING FRONT DRIVE SHAFT Loosen the six nuts, while depressing the brake pedal.
REMOVE FREE WHEELING HUB OR FLANGE
REMOVE SNAP RING AND SPACER Using snap ring pliers, remove the snap ring from the drive shaft.
REMOVE FRONT DRIVE SHAFT First pull the front drive shaft inboard joint tulip from the side gear shaft, and then pull it out from the steering knuckle
