chevy p/u wont start

chevy p/u wont start

i have a 1992 chevy 1/2 ton 6 cylinder pickup. having a starting problem, i turn the key on, the engine turns - motor activated, but the starter doesnt stop operating, doesnt start the truck, i can remove the key...it doesnt shut down until the battery cable is disconnected. Help....any advice

The starter problem could be in the ignition switch, but is much more likely in the starter solenoid. They have a pair of contacts driven together by an electromagnetic drive which is ignition key activated. When they get worn and pitted they heat up on contact and sometimes stick together which keeps the starter running.

Solenoids aren't overly expensive and can be changed DIY pretty easily - especially on an inline 6. On a Chevy it should be piggy backed on the starter.

In addition to what has been mentioned, a weak batt or bad cables can act this way also. RW
