power steering growling noises
Hi, when i crank my 2000 dodge ram diesel on cold mornings there is a growling sound coming from it, and i can not turn the steering wheel and cannot get hardly and brake response until it warms up. I've had to replace the power steering unit one time before which was done by the dealer cause it was still under warranty at that time. It seems to all work fine and no more noises after it warms up and driven a few miles. Also until it warms up good you can fell a vibration in the steering wheel when you attempt to turn it. I sure hope it does not need replacing again already. I have checked the fluid and its ok. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Its now time to put a steering rack in this unit. I just did one yesterday at work and the only frustrating part was getting the power steering lines loose but only took an hour.

1. On the steering side, make sure your belt is GOOD!
2. Not familiar with your vehicle, but if you have a serpentine belt, the spring on the belt tensioner could be failing, and you're not getting all the tension on the belt to turn everything when it still cold.
Remember, cold does funny things: i.e. I can't angle the plow on my truck until that fluid gets warmed up.
