1994 Ford Ranger V6

I have a 94 ford ranger with 180000 miles when I start it up after it has been sitting for a few hours it misses and back fires for about 2-3 miles of driving then stops. It doesn't do it while sitting or while in nutral only when in drive. If I let it sit more than a couple hours it does it but only after a couple of hours it seams to do it no matter what the time of year. Any help would be great.
Thanks
ROb

if it has a distributer would start with a cap and rotor you may want to do the wires and plugs also if its been awhile as it sounds like its a ignition related problem.

Well the last time I had a major tune up was @ around 120000. I would of thought that if it was the above it would do it all the time and not just for the 3-5 min after start up. Is there a way it could be a vac problem? I just dont understand why it only does it while its cold. Thanks for your input I will try what you said first, and see what happens.
