4x4 clunking

I have a 94 ranger 4x4 ,push button to lock in front wheels. when I try to use it acts like it wants to go and then it clunks and seems to jump out of 4 wheel drive then tries to catch again. Do I need to pull apart and regrease or something else? Is there a usual cause or something fords are prone to wearing on this truck?

The hubs may be stripped. They are a very light design I am amazed they lasted this long. When the auto hubs gave out on my 97 Ranger, the Ford dealer wanted $695.00 per sideplus installation as they are a sealed non serviceable unit. Fortunately, mine has the earlier front end, same as yours, and I was able to convert it to Warn manuals which are much better and a heck of a lot cheaper. Just remember to unlock them when not needed.
