1966 Ford F100 V8

My inlaws have a 1966 F100 that has been in the barn for about 3/4 years that I would like to get running again. The reason they stopped using it was it acted like it would start fire when you would start it. I went out last weekend and hooked up a battery charger just to see what would happen and the alternator started to get extremely hot and smoking. My guess would be it's the alternator but I could be wrong does anyone have any good advice?

Thanks for the help!

Disconnect connection at alternator long enough to start it & see what happens.

I hope you did not hook the charger backwards. Also, was the battery installed or did you try to start it directly off the charger?
