Oil on Air Filter

During an oil change at Mr. Lube, I was shown that I had oil blowby on my air filter. What would cause that?

(don't tell me if its expensive ;-)

Don't have a manual on yours right now but if there is a problem,(could be small) with your PCV system, that could cause it. Not sure if you have one or not, but could be as simple as changing your $5.00 PCV valve. If it's only a small amount of oil, I wouldn't panic.

Yeah, it was just a bit. I'll look into the PCV valve deal.

Thanks for the reassurance

Agreed..unless its dripping oil..its pretty common to have a dark spot somewhere on the filter. It's also pretty common for quick lube places to point to normal indications and offer some sort of remedy. Did they suggest anything?

Oh...and you only have 10K miles on a 3-4 y/o car?

No, wasn't 'dripping' oil ... looked like a fine mist on a piece of the filter.

Yup, only 10,000 miles. It was a lease return, 'driven by a little old guy just to and from the grocery store'.

Yeah, that old story ;-) Of course there's already a transmission shudder and the oil on the filter so I'm expecting trouble every time I start the thing up.

You must have Email notification on...
Anyway..a car thats not driven much can have issues as well, most are easy fixes though. The EGR (if there) could be varnished up....trans could have some sludge or corrosion. Your trans/engine might be a good candidate for a flush and refill..since it has such low miles.
