Toyota Pickup noise

I have a '94 Toyota 22re pickup 4WD that just started making a strange noise while driving. It's sort of a whirring noise that fades in and out, maybe slightly faster than a second interval between the loud part and 'quiet' part, and it only happens between 30-45MPH, though at highway speeds it may be that the road noise drowns it out. It is not related to the engine, as the RPM doesn't effect it, and the pitch gets a bit higher with higher speeds. I've examined the wheels and I don't see anything rubbing - any ideas?

Road tires or off-road type? Sounds like a tire noise or maybe a u-joint.

It has A/T tires - which have about 25,000 on them with plenty of good tread left.

I would go with TG on the U joints = a possibility. You should keep a periodic check on those anyway as the truck gets older.

Also if you engage the 4wd manually, the transfer case may not be kicking out for 2wd.

Thanks - I'll check it out. And yes, the 4wd is manually engaged...
