'81 chevy luv fuel pump problems, need HELP

i have a 1981 chevy luv, just replaced the starter but now when i turn the key to on, the fuel pump dosnt turn on to put pressure in the carburetor so when i go to start it, it immediate dies when it tries to idle (at least im hoping this is whats going wrong) i spliced a wire directly into the fuel pump and when i ran it straight to the battery, it made the truck turn over so now im completely stumped.

Just for clarification, are you saying the truck runs if you hotwire the fuel pump? Possible the fuel pump relay has failed. You've checked fuses?

it forced the starter to turn on when the key was in the accessories position. im gonna completley cut the original wire and rewire it to see if that will make a difference

You had some kind of electric backfeed thing going on sounds like.

So, now it will fire when you crank, but won't idle when you relelase the key?

Go back to the starter, and make sure you didnt Forget one of the "LINKS" .......Or broke one in the process.....

Also, check the oil.....Low oil pressure will shut the pump down as a failsafe to avoid "Self destruction"...
