Thumbs down 91 Ford F-150 Distributor Gear

I have a 91 ford f-150 with a straight 6 engine. My sister in law borrowed it and somehow in her travels the camshaft destroyed the gears of the distributor. The distributor spins freely, the oil pump spins as well. Does anyone know if this is common, or what could have happened to cause this?

What might have happened is the roll pin holding the drive gear to the distributor shaft may have sheared. I've never heard of that happening (and can't think of what would cause it), but the symptoms would match, except that if the drive gear separated from the shaft in that manner you should be able to grab the rotor and pull the shaft right out of the distributor body.
