1997 ford f150 oil light

Hi,
i have an 97 f150 4.2l with 168k on it. when the truck is at it's normal temp which hoovers around the low side of the gauge. the oil gauge when i stop and the truck is in drive the oil
gauge drops and bounces around then the oil light comes on.
if i put it in neutral the pressure returns to normal.

i'm assuming when i had the oil changed ford dealer put in 5w20. any ideas what i can do to make it run smoother. it doesn't loss oil which is a good thing i think.

5W-20 engine oil ? that is too light for your engine for that model year they useally run either 5W-30 or 10W30 oil if you still have the owner manual it should be mention in there for what weight oil it should be using.

Actually that is the weight that engine calls for. I would have the oil pressure sender checked out. It could be failing, or there could be a more serious issue with the engine. First, does it start ticking when the pressure drops?

I don't want to give you a wild goose chase but there some way you can put in tempory mech oil pressure gauge to verfiy the oil pressure on the motour ??

you should have at least 25 or so PSIG at idle IIRC the warning light do come on either 7 or 15 PSIG one of the two.

if you have good oil pressure at idle then sound like one of the lifter is going bad.

I don't have much details with 4.2L engine so one of the members may have more details they can able fill you in more with it.

Merci,Marc
