Running lights stay on.......

I have a 2001 Chevy Silverado. I noticed the other day my daytime running lights were not working, when I got home I shut off the truck and then my running lights were on. When I start up the truck they are off, when I turn off the truck they are on, the only way I can get them off is to disconnect the battery. This happens 80%of the time, sometimes they will work normal, the rest of the the time they work just the opposite. Is there anything I can check to see why this is happening? Thanks.....

Hi.

As far as I know when you turn the vehicle off the lights are supposed to stay on for safety. They should stay on a minute or so.

And when you start the truck, yes they do go off. They should come on when the vehicle is put in gear.

Thats how my GM autos work.

Of course you may have a legit issue, but it sounds more or less like above.

I've had this truck for 4 years now and the lights never stayed on for safety, my interior light always stays on for about a minute then goes off, but my exterior lights never did. I also went in the house for for about 15 minutes, came out and they were still on. Even if I put the truck in gear, sometimes the daytime running lights won't come on, I had someone in front of my truck watching.

Hmm that will be difficult to find the issue. If you have the repair manual, like a haynes, and looked at the electrical section schematics it may direct you to a location.

Like a relay under the hood in the fuse pack, etc.....Loose connection, corroded terminals...????

The lights have been good the past few days doing what they should. Today I came home, shut off the truck and the running lights stayed on again. I opened the big fuse box under the hood and tapped on all the relays, lights went out, only problem is I don't know which relay made them go off. The next time they stay on I'll tap on one at a time till I find the one that makes the lights shut off. Someone told me it might be the DRL relay, when I find the the right one I'll replace it and see what happens. I'll post and let you know.....

There should be a diagram under the lid that tells what they are. Most are of the same type and sometimes can be swapped with another for troubleshooting purposes.

A repair manual is good to have if your going to keep the truck.
