Chevy 1500, 95, will not shift out of Drive

My brother has a 95 Chevy 1500 and the transmission will not shift out of Drive. Of course, this means, it cannot be started. Any idea where to start looking?

Thanks,

Just to preclude any internal boogers, has anyone lifted the rear of the truck, blocked the front wheels, removed the linkage at the tranny and tried to move it into park? Sometimes pressure from malaligned rear ends, linkage itself, etc. can cause this problem. If this proves negative, then not much else to do but to relegate the tranny to a repair facility.

You said it won't shift out of drive. Does it just stay in drive, and the lever can be moved, or does the lever not move either. If the lever moves, it could be just the cable came off.
