'98 GMC Jimmy blower motor not working

Daughter's blower fan became intermittent over this past summer, but I found by popping the hood and hitting the fully enclosed fan housing and control unit plastic 'box' it would come back to life and work for a while. Well that type of percussive maintenance only worked for so long and now nothing is getting it to come back on. I recall a friend telling me I may need to actually cut that box open to replace whatever's inside of it. I also think I saw a "cut here" dashed line on this box last time I looked closely at it.
Has anyone attempted this repair? Cost of parts and level of difficulty? Thanks for any help.

If hitting it made it work I would suspect the motor. But would inspect the blower resistor first. Sorry I cant tell you step by step instructions on this.
