how do i go about testing either of these components to narrow down the reason of engine overheating. engine is perkins deisel. ad4-203

The thermostat is the easiest to replace. If you haven't replaced it this century, it's time. Start the engine and with the radiator cap off, when it reaches operating temperature, if the water pump is functioning, you will see water moving in the radiator. Collapsing hoses are another cause of overheating. They look fine, but when hot and under suction they can fail and cut off water to the system.

Or you could put the thermostat in a pan of water with a thermometer and see if it opens at the proper temp.
